A very important aspect of Muay Thai, because for every attack there is a defensive move. The hands are held high to protect the head and chin from shin kicks and punches, knuckles at temple level is a good guide to placement. Raising the shin to meet oncoming kicks blocks low and mid range kicks. Together these two blocks form the basic Muay Thai block, the forearm from fist to elbow meeting the raised leg and the shin from knee to foot and forms the protective shield. Defensive moves also include pulling the head and upper body back to avoid high kicks, or moving one step back out of range or to the side whilst catching the foot or leg. With all defensive moves there should be an immediate counter attack.
